Trabalenguas para meter la lengua: the León mix-up
Paco León and Miguel Ángel de León. Miguel Ángel de León and Paco León. Say it three times in a row without tripping up. That's the fun of Trabalenguas para meter la lengua (A Tongue-Twister for Slipping In the Tongue), a song born from a coincidence of surnames that squeezes it until it becomes a game.
The lyrics keep adding names. To Paco León is added María León, and then an Ana María de León who also joins the list. So many Leóns together that your head gets in a muddle, and that's exactly the effect a tongue-twister is after. Lengua, lengua, lengua (tongue, tongue, tongue), it repeats, like someone practising diction in front of the mirror.
The double meaning
Of course the title fools nobody. Meter la lengua (slipping in the tongue) has its double reading, and the song plays it cheekily: it looks like a tongue-twister for slipping the tongue to Paco León, it admits, and adds right away that nothing is made up. I love that mix of shameless flirting and swearing it's all true, like a child caught red-handed who insists it wasn't him.
There's even a wedding fantasy, with an invitation and a special guest, which takes the muddle into farce territory. Everything is told in the tone of someone playing, not someone reporting.
And the lyrics cover themselves before the blow: don't go thinking I'm a stalker. It's a very self-aware wink. The song knows it's joking with famous people's names and makes clear this is a game, mischievous admiration and nothing more.
For me, this kind of song has a special charm, because it starts from something as silly as a coincidence of names. They're the ones that stay in your head for days, and suddenly you find yourself repeating surnames in the shower.
Who is it for? For fans of Spanish film and TV, for anyone who enjoys wordplay and for anyone who has ever had an impossible crush on someone on screen. Also for practising diction, why not.
Put it on at a get-together with friends and challenge someone to follow the lyrics without slipping up. Fair warning: nobody manages it first time.
