Marica chill: glitter, a mango and a German on the beach
«Hoy me levanté con glitter en la cara» ("Today I woke up with glitter on my face"). That's how Marica chill (Chill Queer) begins, and I can't think of a better way to introduce a day off on the coast. The night before was madness, but there's no need to tell the whole saga. Time for a black coffee, no milk and no drama, and heading down to the beach in heels.
The song is written in Spanglish and is a pure summer postcard. The neighbour remarks that this boy is too much. The fruit seller, on the other hand, gives away a mango. There's a fan, see-through shorts and a very sensible philosophical conclusion: life is short and I'm not cautious. I love that cast of beach-town characters, with the one criticising from the balcony and the one smiling at you from the stall.
The chorus is a statement of intent. Marica chill, no sorrow, no stress, no guilt and no plan. Walking like a diva in a market-stall dress. Let them call me «loca», that's my brand. That idea of turning the insult into a personal brand feels very much part of our culture: whatever they shout at you, you embroider on your T-shirt.
There are very tender details too. He doesn't need a partner to feel good, his dogs and his green eyeliner are enough. He speaks Spanglish with whoever wants to listen, and if they don't understand, let them enjoy it anyway. And if they look at him, he winks; if they criticise him, he blows little kisses and puts on reggaeton.
The tourist scene is my favourite. He asks to kiss his hand, and the answer is only if he dances flamenco. And like that, no date and no apps, he ends up dancing with a hot German guy. It's the spontaneity we miss so much when everything goes through a screen.
The ending sums it up: if I'm ridiculous, all the better. I'd rather that than be a respectable gentleman.
I dedicate it to anyone who needs a holiday from themselves. Put it on lying on your towel, with sun cream and without looking at your phone.

Hoy me levanté con glitter en la caraLast night was crazy, but I don’t need a sagaUn café solo, sin leche y sin dramaAnd I still wear heels pa’ bajar a la playa
La vecina said: that boy’s too muchPero el frutero me regaló un mango lushCon un abanico y mi short transparenteDije: life is short, no soy prudente
Un turista said: can I kiss your handLe dije: only if you dance flamenco, manY así sin plan, sin cita ni appsAcabé bailando con un chulo alemán
Porque la vida no me la explicoI just flow, sin moral ni castigoSi soy ridículo, pues mejorI’d rather that than be un señor
Marica chill, sin pena, sin stressWalkin’ like a diva en mi mercadillo dressMarica chill, sin culpa, sin planHoy solo quiero brillar en el ultramarQue me llamen loca, that’s my brandMarica chill, mi vibe, my land
