Hoy es el último adiós: a farewell with no beating around the bush
I've only come to tell you that today is the last goodbye. That's all. That's the entire lyric of this song, repeated over and over, with small variations in how the sentence is broken up. And for me it's one of the most forceful in PLANETA GAYFOLK precisely because of that.
Some farewells need explanations, long letters, lists of reasons. And others no longer do. When you reach a certain point, any argument is superfluous. You don't come to argue or to ask for anything. You don't come to recall the good or throw the bad in their face. You come only to say it. Hoy es el último adiós (Today Is the Last Goodbye) is that second kind of farewell.
Saying the same thing until you believe it
I'm very interested in what repetition does in this song. The first time you hear the sentence, it sounds like an announcement. The fifth, it sounds like effort, as if it were hard to stand firm. The tenth, it already sounds like certainty. There are moments when the sentence breaks into single words, I, only, as if you had to take a breath before carrying on. And at the end it's reduced to the essentials: the last goodbye, goodbye, goodbye. Shorter and shorter, like someone walking away down a corridor.
That I at the beginning also seems important to me. It isn't we say goodbye, it isn't this is ending. It's I have come. It's a decision of one's own, taken in the first person, and that has a lot of strength after so many lyrics in the project where the narrator was at the mercy of what the other did.
The curious thing is that there are no insults or explicit tears. No karma, no narcissists, no cockroaches. Just the sentence. And perhaps that's why it's so final. When you no longer even feel like getting angry, it's really over.
Who would I dedicate it to? To anyone who has had to go to a last meeting knowing it was the last. To anyone about to do it who needs courage. To anyone who already did it and still wonders whether it was right.
Put it on when you have to say goodbye to something for real. A person, a city, a stage of life. And let the repetition do its work.
