Dark Corners: dancing in the dark corner of the dance floor

The day starts late and without sun, and the mirror, instead of giving back a smile, asks in Spanish what happened. That language switch is how Dark Corners begins, a song that for me is about sadness dressed up as a party.

The lyrics jump from English to Spanish very naturally, the way so many of us talk on the dance floor or in messages to friends who live abroad. And that back-and-forth fits what it tells: someone who is in two places at once, shining on the outside and switched off on the inside. There's no rainbow in their sky, no tears with glitter. Just calm eyes and a grey party inside their head.

The shadow is the owner

The chorus holds the central image: dancing in the dark corners with their own shadow, which owns their nights and their heart. I find it a very beautiful and very sad way of describing loneliness in the middle of the noise. No applause, no rumours, the king of nothing. And the line that tops it all: they smile «pa' no sentir» (so as not to feel).

There's a line that makes me laugh and shrink at the same time: high heels, low spirits. That contrast, so drag, so Saturday night, sums up the tone perfectly. On the outside there's a show, make-up, killer heels; on the inside, there's no fuel left. The dance floor is theirs, but so is the sorrow.

The bridge dims the lights even further. Shadows and lights, pretending under the street lamp, glitter on the skin and pure paper inside. Even so, the song doesn't give up completely: the heart slips away, but it's still here, faking it with love.

And the ending is one of my favourites in this batch. Someone asks if they're okay, and the answer comes almost in a whisper: «yeah... just dancing». It's exactly what we all answer when we don't want to explain ourselves.

I'd dedicate this song to whoever is always the life of the party and nobody asks how they really are. Listen to it in the early hours, in the taxi home, when the club lights are already behind you and you can finally stop smiling.

Lyrics · Dark Corners

I wake up late, no sun todayThe mirror says “qué pasó, hey?”My colors fade behind my smileCamino lento, mile by mile

Ain’t no rainbow in my skyNo glitter tears, just quiet eyesEn mi cabeza hay un party grisAnd no one sees what’s under this

I’m dancing in the dark cornersCon mi sombra, she’s the ownerOf my nights, of my heartShe tears the stars apartDancing in the dark cornersSin aplausos, sin rumoresI’m the king of nothing hereBut I smile pa’ no sentir

My heels are high, mi mood is lowI fake a show they’ll never knowEn las calles brillo másPero por dentro no hay más gas

La pista es mía, la pena igualNadie la nota, es tan banalTacones altos, alma sin vozY yo bailando pa’ no decir adiós

I’m dancing in the dark cornersCon mi sombra, she’s the ownerOf my nights, of my heartShe tears the stars apartDancing in the dark cornersSin aplausos, sin rumoresI’m the king of nothing hereBut I smile pa’ no sentir

Sombras y luces, ese es mi rolFingiendo siempre bajo el farolLágrimas rotas, brillo en mi pielPero inside es puro papelAy, mi corazón se vaBut I’m still aquí, verdadCon mi sombra, sin colorBut I fake it with amor

I’m dancing in the dark cornersCon mi sombra, she’s the ownerOf my nights, of my heartShe tears the stars apartDancing in the dark cornersSin aplausos, sin rumoresI’m the king of nothing hereBut I smile pa’ no sentir

Hey… are you okay?Yeah… just dancing…
