Chihuahua: the smallest dance partner in the club
The dance partner in this song measures about twenty centimetres and has the brightest eyes on the floor. That's the premise of Chihuahua, a track in English that turns the club into a place where everyone fits, dog included.
The lyrics paint the scene in mirror-ball colours: flashing lights, the floor alive, the DJ spinning and some little paws hitting the floor exactly on the beat. Every step, every move, perfectly in sync. It's a tender and absurd image at the same time, which is my favourite combination.
The chorus is a direct invitation: chihuahua, chihuahua, dance with me, under the disco light, running free. And there's a line I love for how literal it is: «Bark it out, feel the heat». Instead of shouting with your hands in the air, here you bark. Barks here, barks there, the air full of barking and paws dancing without a care.
Underneath all that there's a tribute to the most unconditional love there is, that of an animal that keeps you company without asking for anything. Some people go out partying to find someone. Here the company is already at home and the party is about celebrating it. «Life's so sweet», the lyrics say, and they say it without irony, which is almost a rarity in my repertoire.
It also has something of a vindication of the small dog, so often looked down on. The chihuahua is the absolute star: it jumps high, touches the sky and feels the bass in its chest. No handbag dog here; a dance-floor star.
Towards the end, as the night fades, the song asks you not to pull a long face, because you'll be back. It's the promise of any good party.
Dedicate it to anyone who has a chihuahua and treats it as what it is: the centre of the universe. And if you have one at home, put it on at a reasonable volume and take your companion out for a dance. You won't need to teach it the steps.

Lights flash, the floor's alive,My little friend, with eyes so bright,Paws tap, the rhythm’s right,Together we dance into the night.
Every step, every move,We sync up, get into the groove,The DJ spins, we find our beat,With my chihuahua, life’s so sweet.
Chihuahua, chihuahua, dance with me,Under the disco light, we’re running free,Bark it out, feel the heat,Chihuahua, chihuahua, move your feet!
Spin around, jump up high,My furry friend, we touch the sky,The bass drops, hearts fly,With every bark, we feel so alive.
