Not Your Beggar, Not Your Punchbag: Mike Sain't Louis Writes the Quiet Side of Queer Life in “Tu mendigo”

Far from the glitter of his dance-floor songs, the Madrid-based indie alternative artist — “the first AI singer-songwriter” — tells the story of a borrowed room, a false rescuer and the long road to saying no

MADRID, 25 October 2026 — Queer life is often told through its big moments: coming out, the first Pride, the first kiss in public. Far less is said about the ordinary, unglamorous situations in between — the room you rent because you have nowhere else, the person who “helps” you and then keeps a ledger of that help, the years spent smiling out of obligation. In “Tu mendigo” (“Your Beggar”), Madrid-based indie alternative artist Mike Sain't Louis writes about exactly that territory, and he does it with a precision that makes the song hard to shake off.

“Y tú, tan convencido / de que sigo siendo tu mendigo,” runs the line at the centre of the song: “And you, so convinced / that I'm still your beggar.” It is less a chorus than a verdict, delivered calmly by someone who has finally stopped playing the part.

A Refuge That Was Really a Cell

The story is told in images rather than accusations. Someone opens a door with a borrowed key and calls the place a refuge; it turns out to be a rented cell. There is a corner with a stained rug, a silence full of self-interested friendship. The other person looks after the business but not the narrator's trembling hands, and insists the cold comes from the weather rather than from fever.

The lyric keeps returning to the narrator taking up as little space as possible: sitting where there was no room, being kicked for not asking permission, smiling out of politeness and crying without witnesses. Later comes the turn — the realisation that the chaos the other person blamed on the narrator was being brought in by the accuser all along. By the end, the song names what was lost: twelve whole years.

One of the sharpest observations in the lyric is that the other person was never cast as a villain. He was the saviour — and that is precisely the trap. The narrator describes still feeling held captive in that room, long after the door has closed. It is a detail anyone who has escaped a controlling relationship will understand: the difficulty is rarely the leaving itself, but convincing yourself, and others, that someone who appeared so generous was doing harm. The song also notes, with a bitterness that never tips into melodrama, how the other person resented the narrator's art, body, luck and even joy. Envy disguised as concern is a recurring figure in Mike Sain't Louis's writing, and here it is drawn with particular clarity.

“It's a song about the people who rescue you so they can own you,” says Mike Sain't Louis. “From the outside, they look like the good guy. That's what makes it so hard to leave, and so hard to explain to anyone.”

The Everyday Side of Queer Life

What makes “Tu mendigo” stand out in his catalogue is how everyday it feels. There is no glamour here, no camp punchline. There is a room, a debt of gratitude and a slow erosion of self-worth — situations that many queer people, especially those who have had to leave home or start over in a new city, will recognise.

That is part of what Mike Sain't Louis has set out to document. He describes himself as an indie alternative artist, and his songs cover the full range of queer life in Spain: love and heartbreak, ex-boyfriends, gossiping neighbours, nights out, liberation and mental health. Many of them are funny, cheeky and deliberately uncensored. “Tu mendigo” shows the other side of the same honesty: the quieter, harder stories that sit behind the jokes.

He has also spoken publicly about the purpose behind much of this writing. With professional support, he turns years of relationships with narcissistic partners into music, to give visibility to narcissistic and psychological abuse and the marks it leaves on mental health — so that people who have lived through it feel seen and believed. “Tu mendigo” is one of the clearest examples of that mission: a song that describes control dressed up as kindness, and the moment someone decides they are no longer anyone's punchbag.

Words First, Machine Second

Mike Sain't Louis calls himself “the first AI singer-songwriter”, and the emphasis is on the songwriting. He writes every lyric himself. He is the lyricist, composer, music producer, artistic director and CEO of his own independent label, MIKE SAIN'T LOUIS. The music and vocal performances on his recordings are generated with artificial intelligence, which he uses as a production and arranging tool. He does not sing, and does not claim to; the voice is generated. The words, the ideas and the artistic direction are his.

A song like “Tu mendigo” makes the point better than any argument. Its power comes from details — the borrowed key, the stained rug, the fever mistaken for the weather — that could only come from someone who has lived something and found the exact words for it.

“People ask what the AI does,” he says. “It plays the instrument. But it has never sat in that room. I have. That's the part nobody else can write.”

Inside the GAYFOLK Universe

The song belongs to PLANETA GAYFOLK, a project of 273 singles and more than 280 music videos released over roughly two years. The project is structured as a trilogy, conceived as a single journey: “Descubierto un nuevo planeta llamado GAYFOLK” (“A New Planet Called GAYFOLK Has Been Discovered”), “Ojalá se pudiera viajar a GAYFOLK” (“If Only You Could Travel to GAYFOLK”) and “El día de la liberación” (“Liberation Day”) — the story of a trip to a planet where everyone can live exactly as they are.

Musically, his work ranges from electropop to copla, the traditional Spanish song form, and from alternative pop to ballads. Most songs are in Spanish, with others in English, French and Portuguese. Many listeners first discovered him in 2024 when “Tan Cateto” went viral on TikTok — a very different, much lighter song, which makes the depth of “Tu mendigo” all the more striking.

Within that universe, a song like this one explains why a planet like GAYFOLK needs to exist at all. A place where nobody has to be grateful for a corner of someone else's room. A place where you can take up space without asking.

Why It Matters to UK Listeners

British audiences know the confessional songwriter well, and have long embraced artists who turn private pain into plain, unsentimental language. “Tu mendigo” belongs to that family, even though it is written in Spanish. The situation it describes — being housed, employed or befriended by someone who then holds it over you — is universal, and conversations about coercive control and emotional abuse have made many listeners more alert to how such dynamics work.

Because every song on Mike Sain't Louis's website is published with its full lyrics, English-speaking listeners can follow the story line by line with a translation. It is a song that rewards the effort: each verse adds a new detail, and the final verses land with real weight.

The Photograph

The image accompanying this release shows Mike Sain't Louis in a leather jacket above a city's rooftops at sunset. It is a picture of being outside, high up and unconfined — a long way from the cramped room described in the song. Read alongside “Tu mendigo”, it feels like the view from after: the moment someone has finally walked out of the door.
