How to Listen to a Joke That Is Telling the Truth: A Practical Guide to Mike Sain't Louis, From a Mock Election Night to a Dance Track About Trauma

Five simple listening habits for getting the most out of the free catalog of the Madrid indie alternative artist who calls himself ‘the first AI singer-songwriter’

A man with black curly hair and a short beard, wearing a terracotta linen shirt open over a white tank top, with tattoos on his chest and arms, sits in a bright workshop with a large window, plants and wooden planks behind him, looking off to his right.
Mike Sain't Louis in a bright workshop full of daylight and plants: a working space for an artist who treats humor as a craft, not a costume.

Madrid, October 25, 2026 – There is a question Mike Sain't Louis gets asked with a slightly suspicious smile: if artificial intelligence makes the music, what stops it from making the jokes too? His answer is short. "Humor isn't manufactured," he says. "It's committed. Somebody has to mean it."

That idea is the best key to the work of the Madrid-based indie alternative artist, who presents himself as "the first AI singer-songwriter." He writes every lyric and acts as composer, music producer, artistic director and CEO of his own independent label, MIKE SAIN'T LOUIS, with no record company and no middlemen. The music and vocal performances are generated with AI, a production and arranging tool he steers version by version. Over roughly two years, that method has produced PLANETA GAYFOLK: 273 singles and more than 280 music videos, all free to stream and download at mikesaintlouis.com.

Many of those songs are funny. Almost none of them are only funny. This guide offers five practical habits for hearing the difference, using two tracks that could hardly be further apart.

Habit 1: Find the target before you laugh

Mike Sain't Louis has written that the kind of humor he cares about always aims at something: an ex, a prejudice, or himself. A machine, in his view, can produce something pleasant, the office birthday card kind of funny. What it cannot do is point.

So the first step is simple. When a song makes you smile, ask who it is aimed at.

Try it with "Noemí Argüelles va ganando en las encuestas" ("Noemí Argüelles is winning in the polls"). The song opens like a breaking-news bulletin: Elon Musk and Donald Trump are meeting, defeated and well hidden. Why? Because Noemí Argüelles is ahead in the polls. Meanwhile the narrator has been smacked in the face by a door and never got his anesthetic, all for the same reason. The chorus repeats the headline until it becomes a chant.

The target is not a single politician. It is the theater of power itself, and the way the most powerful men on the planet can be reduced, in three minutes of Spanish pop, to two guys hiding in a back room.

Habit 2: Read the lyrics on screen

Every song on mikesaintlouis.com comes with its full lyrics. Use them. Much of the comedy lives in Spanish wordplay, rhythm and specific phrases, and for US listeners whose Spanish is somewhere between high school and Duolingo, having the text in front of you turns a catchy track into a readable joke.

The artist applies a similar test to his own work: when choosing between AI-generated versions of a song, he asks whether he could take the lyric down as dictation. If a joke is not understood, he says, it is not a joke.

Habit 3: Notice when the jokes stop

Now switch to "Beat My Post-Traumatic Stress." This is a song, in his own description, about surviving what your body still remembers: walking through fear, anxiety and silence and turning them into rhythm. Every synth carries a scar, he writes; every beat is a heartbeat he thought he had lost.

There is no punchline here. And that silence is the point. After an hour of his satire, the absence of jokes lands harder than any confession. Mike Sain't Louis has said publicly that, with professional help, he turns years of relationships with narcissistic partners into music, to make psychological abuse and its effects on mental health visible and to help people who live through it feel seen and believed. "Beat My Post-Traumatic Stress" is where that purpose speaks plainly.

His own summary is one of the best lines in his notes: sometimes healing doesn't whisper, it dances.

Habit 4: Play the two back to back

This is the most useful exercise in the guide. Put the poll song and the trauma song next to each other and listen through.

What you hear is the same writer using two tools for one job. The satire shrinks what is frightening until it fits in a chorus. The dance track makes room for what cannot be shrunk. Neither cancels the other.

"Laughing isn't the opposite of hurting," he says. "Sometimes it's the only way I can say the hurt out loud without anybody changing the subject."

Habit 5: Follow the thread outward

Once you hear how the humor works, the rest of the catalog opens up. Many listeners found him in 2024, when "Tan Cateto" went viral on TikTok. From there, the GAYFOLK trilogy offers the long version of the story, three albums conceived as one journey: "Descubierto un nuevo planeta llamado GAYFOLK," "Ojalá se pudiera viajar a GAYFOLK" and "El día de la liberación," toward a planet where everyone can live as they are. The songs are mostly in Spanish, with some in English, French and Portuguese, and range from electropop to copla, alternative pop and ballad. Some lyrics are explicit; that frankness is part of the work.

"If you laughed and then felt a bit strange," he says, "you were listening properly."
