Tu Mendigo: the refuge that was really a rented cell
Some help comes at a very high price. Tu Mendigo (Your Beggar) is about one such kind: that of someone who opens their door, offers a corner and presents themselves as a saviour, when in fact they're building a cage.
The first verse makes it clear with an image I think is among the best I've written: the door opens with a borrowed key and what seemed a refuge was a rented cell. A corner with a stained rug and a silence full of self-serving friendship.
The lyrics put a finger on those details that give away whoever has you in their hand. They looked after the company, but not the trembling of the person beside them. They played down the cold as if it were just the weather. It bothered them to see him hurt and offended them to see him happy. His art, his body, his luck all pained them.
Without making a sound
The chorus is devastating because of how small everything is. Sitting where there was no room. Getting kicked for not asking permission. Smiling out of obligation and crying without witnesses. There are no big scenes, just that everyday humiliation nobody else sees.
And the title phrase, repeated like an echo: you, so convinced I'm still your beggar.
I'm very interested in the final twist, when the song recognises that this person didn't present themselves as a villain, but as a saviour. That's what makes it so hard to get out. How do you get angry with someone who is supposedly rescuing you? The lyrics speak of twelve whole years lost like that, breaking slowly.
But there's a line that changes everything: today he's no longer their punching bag, and much less their beggar.
It's slow, for listening to closely and without distractions, letting each image land with its full weight. I'd dedicate it to anyone who has mistaken dependence for gratitude and is starting to see the difference.

Lyrics · Tu Mendigo
