Spoiler: chronicle of a social-media flirtation I already know the ending of

It starts with something innocent. A like on a photo of Madonna. Who hasn't liked a Madonna post at some point? Well, that's how Spoiler begins, and anyone who has lived through something similar knows that from there to disaster is only a few steps.

The lyrics count them one by one, like a detective jotting things down in a notebook. At first he only follows official accounts. A week later, Madonna isn't enough. He changes his profile picture, now posing with perfect lips. He posts stories often, seducing the camera. And the narrator keeps count: at least ten likes on the photo of the guy with the abs.

The hearts phase

I find that almost scientific precision hugely entertaining. There are phases. First the likes, then the lives surrounded by perfect boys, then the hearts and the smiley face in a comment. And whatever comes of it, the lyrics say, is totally involuntary. I think that irony is brilliant.

The best part comes when the other one takes offence and shouts that he's lost the plot. And that's where the song pulls out its title: if you like, I'll give you a spoiler of this B-movie horror film. Because the ending is already known. We end up breaking up.

But there's a twist, and that's what turns the song into more than a reproach. The narrator doesn't intend to suffer anymore. He repeats it until he convinces himself and us: «pero esta vez soy inmune, no me va a doler» (but this time I'm immune, it won't hurt me). Again and again. The more he repeats it, the clearer it is that it's a spell, a formula to make it true. And that has something tender and something very comic at the same time.

It's a very now song. It talks about jealousy in the language of Instagram, about how a relationship cracks like by like, and it does it without bolero melodrama, with the humour of someone who has seen this movie before.

Send it to that friend who examines her boyfriend's activity with a magnifying glass. Or put it on yourself when you feel the story repeating itself. And if it is, remember: you already know the ending.
