¡Qué Polvo Tiene Paco León!: a cheeky compliment turned into a tribute
The title says it all, and says it with its mouth full. ¡Qué Polvo Tiene Paco León! (roughly, "Paco León Is So Shaggable!") is exactly what it sounds like: an old-fashioned piropo, the kind of compliment blurted out loud in the middle of a bar conversation, elevated into a song.
I want to clear something up from the start, because with a title like that it's easy to get the wrong idea: this isn't about gossip or private life. It's about magnetism. About that quality some people have of filling a screen without needing to open their mouth.
For me it's a tribute made from humour and admiration. To his talent, his attitude and that fearless way of doing things that is so welcome in a country where it's still hard to step off the script.
Desire with a wink
The song plays with desire openly, without covering up. And it does so because desire is also a way of looking at art. When someone seems irresistible to you in what they do, that's admiration too, just with a little more heat.
No mockery at all. It's a knowing wink, the kind exchanged between people who understand each other. A celebration of queer beauty and of a boldness that, when it's elegant, is almost a virtue.
The video follows the same line: irony, freedom and skin that doesn't ask permission to show itself. If art always had to be proper, it would be very poor indeed.
Who would I dedicate it to? To anyone who has ever sighed in front of the TV. And, with all the respect and affection in the world, to Paco León himself, for being an inspiration.
I love imagining the face of someone hearing it for the first time without knowing anything. The title promises scandal and what they find is a declaration of admiration with lots of sparkle.
Listen to it with your friends, at that point in the night when nobody hides their crushes any more.
