¿Por qué él no llora? I'm a Padilla too
«Yo sí entiendo a Ylenia Padilla. Yo también soy Padilla» (I do understand Ylenia Padilla. I'm a Padilla too). That's how the song opens, with a declaration of support so direct it could be a placard at a demonstration. Because ¿Por qué él no llora? (Why Doesn't He Cry?) is precisely about that: identifying with someone the whole world seems to have turned its back on.
The central part of the lyrics repeats like a mantra. I too have felt at some point that everyone has let me down, that they turned their backs on me at the worst possible moment. It's a feeling known to anyone who has gone through a break-up or a crisis in public, or simply a time when the phone stops ringing just when you need it most.
The exaggerated support amuses me. I'm like her, I defend her, I'm on her side, I support her publicly. The song almost becomes a militant fan club, with murmurs between verses that give it the air of a lament. There's humour, of course, but also sincerity: sometimes you recognise yourself in the person you least expected.
The question in the title
Towards the end the song changes course and the question that names it appears. A wedding celebrated in the morning that by nightfall has already been forgotten, because there's only room to think about one thing: why doesn't he cry. Why is one person dragging dark circles down to the floor while the other shows off a new tattoo.
For me that's the big question of any break-up. Why does it hurt one person so much while the other seems completely unaffected. Why does one collapse while the other goes out partying, gets a tattoo and posts smiling photos. It's unfair, but it happens all the time.
I'd dedicate it to anyone who has felt abandoned at the worst moment and watched their ex rebuild their life in record time. Listen to it when you feel alone against the world, and remember that at least you've got company in that. We've all been a bit of a Padilla at some point.
