No Quiero Otro Novio Cojín: from grey routine to a goodbye with no way back
For the first half, No Quiero Otro Novio Cojín (I Don't Want Another Cushion Boyfriend) seems like a different song. One about routine: waking up alone, nameless streets, faceless people, bland work, bitter coffee. Everything repeats, nothing surprises, and the chorus ends with a «¡Me ofende!» ("It offends me!") that I find hilarious for how dramatic it is.
That grey part is the set. What comes after is the explanation.
Suddenly the tone changes and the song starts settling scores. This is over, the free ride has ended. And the title phrase arrives: I don't want another cushion boyfriend. For me a cushion boyfriend is the one who gets comfortable in your life, on your sofa and in your bank account, and doesn't get up even to help. He's ended up, the lyrics say, at the level of a sock.
Point one, point two
The funniest part is the inventory of lies, listed like a report. Point one, age: first falsehood. Point two, eye colour: total falsehood. Point three, he boasts of sincerity. Yeah, right! And that so carefully staged fidelity, one more for the list.
The lyrics also imagine that boyfriend's future: a new little show, a new sucker to make fall in love after eyeing up his money, his properties and his car, only to then show off in front of friends he criticises behind their backs.
The ending has a cheek I adore. I don't need a secretary, I'm a businessman. Goodbye, oaf. And, above all, the final conclusion, simple and emphatic: from today I really am happy.
It's a song in two tempos that explains very well how leaving a relationship that was dimming you works. First you live in the fog without understanding why everything is so grey. Then, suddenly, you see it.
Dedicated to anyone about to take the cushion off the sofa.
