No me aparece una ilusión: the four-walls song
Four walls and nobody else. No me aparece una ilusión (No Hope Turns Up for Me) is the most shut-in song on the GAYFOLK planet, and that's on purpose. It's about those periods when you don't feel like leaving your room, when you can't find the strength or the motivation, and when, even surrounded by people, you still feel set apart.
That last nuance seems important to me. The lyrics aren't only about being alone, they're about being alone among so many people. That loneliness in company is very common and very hard to explain, and the song puts it into a simple line anyone can understand.
The chorus comes back again and again, the way thoughts come back when you're in a bad way. And between repetitions, the verses go down step by step. There's no reason left to smile. I don't even dare to pretend. Sadness feels like eternity. I don't feel the warmth of any love. Each day weighs more than yesterday. There's a narrow tunnel, no colours around, no light at the end. It's a very honest description of how the world looks from inside a deep slump.
Someone also appears, almost in passing: in my thoughts there's only you. We don't know who it is, and we don't need to. It could be a lost love or a person who's missed. It's the only spot of colour in an almost grey song.
And what matters most to me is the ending. After so many negatives, a different line arrives: something in me asks to breathe. Maybe one day I'll manage to wake up. It isn't a happy ending, it's something smaller and more real: a crack where a little air gets in.
I dedicate this song to anyone going through a stretch like this. If that's you, know that you're not the only one and that asking for help is fine; talking to someone you trust or to a professional can be the first step towards that waking up. Listen to it when you need someone to understand you without asking you to smile.

Lyrics · NO ME APARECE UNA ILUSIÓN
