La última carta: writing to close, not to get a reply

I'm not writing this to talk to you again. The first sentence of La última carta (The Last Letter) sets the rules from the start: this letter seeks no reply, no attention, no reconciliation. It's a letter to oneself.

That decision seems important to me. Many break-up songs are addressed to the other person, hoping they'll hear it and regret it. Not this one. Here the addressee is almost an excuse to put things in order inside and close what the other never had the courage to acknowledge.

The text goes through every phase of the aftermath. First, the doubts: about your own reactions, about boundaries, about whether you were exaggerating or too sensitive. And then, the short sentence that changes everything: it was you. The one who lied, who manipulated, who said to your face what you wanted to hear while doing the opposite behind your back.

Gaslighting and silences

There's a very lucid moment in which the letter names what happened. The doubts weren't jealousy or insecurity, they were warning signs. And the other person switched them off with gaslighting and silences. I think it's brave to say it that clearly, because many people take years to find that word for what they went through.

It also acknowledges something hard: yes, he loved him, and much more than he deserved. He put up with things you don't put up with for love, because that was dependence disguised as affection.

The final part is the one I like most. There's no more hatred or desire for revenge, no interest in his version. There's one certainty: peace comes from cutting off, from blocking, from silence, from not looking for him. And a line that could go on a mug or be tattooed on a forearm: «Hoy la dignidad pesa más que la nostalgia» (Today dignity weighs more than nostalgia).

The close is elegant and hard at the same time. The harm existed, but it no longer belongs to the other person; he takes it back to heal it himself. And he leaves the other with the only thing he really has: his emptiness.

I'd dedicate it to you if you're at the point where you no longer want explanations. Listen in silence, perhaps with a sheet of paper in front of you, in case you feel like writing your own last letter.

Me quisiste tener siempre ahí: disponible, dudando, esperando. Pero se acabó.

Hoy no te odio, no te deseo mal, no me interesa tu versión.
