Karma: everything comes around, and it has a name
KAAAARMA. Written like that, with the a's multiplied, you can already imagine the chorus. Karma is one of those songs built around a single word, and that word has the patience of someone who knows time is on their side.
The idea is as old as the world: what you do comes back. But the lyrics phrase it in a very neighbourhood way, like a grandmother who has seen it all: everything comes around, and it's called karma. No need for revenge, or plans, or a fight. Just sit back and wait.
A punch every morning
Before reaching that verdict, the song goes through the pain. And it describes it with an image that seems to me one of the most physical in the whole project: a punch a day. Not one huge blow, but a small, constant one, every day, until you forget what living without it was like. When you finally get away and something reminds you, you realise how much it hurt.
Anyone who knows Un puñetazo al día (A Punch a Day) will recognise this part, because Karma takes the final stretch of that story and turns it into a song of its own, shorter and more concentrated. It's like keeping only the moral of the tale.
The crude side isn't missing here either. There's a message with a Canarian accent about where the other can stick his privates, with mojo or with gofio, and a very explicit sexual note about his preferences. I mention it matter-of-factly because the song says it matter-of-factly: it's the humour of someone who has cried enough and now gets to laugh a little at the one who made them cry.
What I like about Karma is that it isn't a song of hatred, even though it has insults. It's a song of trust that things fall into place on their own. There's something very liberating about letting go of the idea of having to deliver justice yourself.
When to listen? When you hear second-hand that the person who hurt you isn't doing so well. Without being too pleased, because that counts for karma too. Just a little bit.
And if you ever doubt it, remember the a's in the chorus. There are a lot of them. Like the time it sometimes takes to arrive.
