Cover of the single ESCUPIRÉ SOBRE TU TUMBA

Escupiré sobre tu tumba: the victim wasn't who he thought

The plan was calculated down to the millimetre. Time, effort, strategy. And even so, something has gone wrong. The lyrics start there, from the moment things begin to go awry for the tormentor, and they don't let go of that score-settling tone until the end.

It's the hardest song in this batch, and that should be said clearly. It speaks of an assault: blows so hard the mind couldn't even process them, and something worse, committed as a group, with him in front as the leader, the star salesman, the champion. There are no embellishments or euphemisms in that part, and I think it's right that there aren't.

The heroine of the film

What changes the story is the chorus. He hadn't counted on the person he chose being just like the heroine of I Spit on Your Grave (Escupiré sobre tu tumba in Spanish), the revenge film in which the assaulted woman comes back for each of those who hurt her. The lyrics make it very clear: he picked the wrong victim prototype, he looked for someone weak, trusting and with their self-esteem on the floor, and found something else.

From there the song allows itself an exaggerated, almost comic-book revenge fantasy, with a shotgun tied where it hurts most and a contraption that explodes when the phone rings. It's B-movie black humour, and it serves the same purpose as those films: turning fear around and making it into something that no longer paralyses.

The real revenge, however, is quieter. It lies in a couple of lines near the end: the narrator rises fast and makes new friends, while the other is exposed, with his reputation at rock bottom. That's the victory that matters. There's no need to destroy anyone when you live well and the other has to watch.

And it signs off with a goodbye full of sarcasm, the kind said with a crooked smile.

It's a song for survivors. For anyone who has been through something like that and one day realised they were still standing, and that the man with the perfect plan is now the one who doesn't understand what's happening.
