Entre cuatro paredes: when not a single hope turns up
No me aparece una ilusión (Not a single hope turns up). That's how Entre cuatro paredes (Within Four Walls) begins, and that first line is repeated so many times throughout the song that it ends up sounding like what it is: a loop that's hard to get out of. You don't feel like leaving the room. You can't find the strength, or the motivation.
It's one of the saddest songs in PLANETA GAYFOLK, and it doesn't have a single joke. No TV references or witty insults. Just one person alone within four walls and a line that seems to me one of the most accurate in the project: always set apart among so many people. Because loneliness isn't always being alone. Sometimes it's being surrounded and feeling you're on another planet.
The tunnel
The verses between the choruses sink lower and lower. There's no reason left to smile. Not even the will to pretend. Sadness feels like eternity. Each day weighs more than the last. And the image of the tunnel appears, narrow and lightless, with one fixed thought inside: in my thoughts there's only you. That line hints that behind it all there's someone, a specific absence.
I think it's important that the song doesn't dress it up. It doesn't turn sadness into something pretty or resolve it with a mug slogan. It lets it be, with all its weight.
And yet, at the end, something changes. Very little, but it changes. «No, pero algo en mí pide respirar» (No, but something in me asks to breathe). And the last line: maybe someday I'll manage to wake up. It isn't a happy ending. It's a maybe. But after everything before it, that maybe is enormous.
This song is for anyone who is in that room right now. Not to force them to cheer up, but so they know they're not the only one who has been there, that someone has put it into words. And for anyone who has someone like that close by, so they understand a bit better what happens on the other side of the door.
If you recognise yourself in it, listen to it, and then try opening the window for a while. And if the weight doesn't lift, talk to someone you trust or to a professional. Asking for help is also a way of breathing.
