What do Madonna, a deodorant and a Valencian supermarket have in common? In principle, nothing. In El productor de Madonna no compra en Mercadona (Madonna's Producer Doesn't Shop at Mercadona), absolutely everything. It's one of the most absurd and most defiant songs on PLANETA GAYFOLK, and I love that it's both at once.
It starts with a complaint delivered word by word, almost stumbling: I constantly have to prove to everyone that I have talent and that my work isn't a fairy tale. It's the weariness of someone who feels they're always sitting an exam. And to defend himself, the song brings out Mirwais, Madonna's producer, as an example that new tools haven't taken the crown away from the queen.
Then comes my favourite part, the shameless boasting. I have no talent? Seriously? I once won a literary prize. He says it with such exaggerated pride that it's impossible not to laugh. And as if that weren't enough, he promises to outdo any traditional album with ninety-three songs instead of thirteen, with their ninety-three music videos if need be. Anything to be left in peace.
From Rexona to the own brand
But the song takes a sentimental turn. Now he can't stand Madonna, and it's the ex's fault. The ex loved Madonna, almost as much as he loved cruising. And here comes the craziest comparison: Madonna was like Rexona, which never lets you down. Well, look, sweetie, I've switched to Mercadona's own brand and it works too. A very domestic and very funny way of saying you can live perfectly well without what you thought was essential.
