El Descarte del Narcisista: a letter to someone crying alone
It doesn't start by talking about the person who wrote it, and that already makes it different. El Descarte del Narcisista (The Narcissist's Discard) begins by addressing someone else: a person crying alone because they don't understand anything, because they believe nobody supports them and that everyone is lying, even their own people.
It's a song of solidarity between people who went through the same man. And the central message fits into three words: you're not alone.
The lyrics go over what is hardest to accept after a relationship like that, which is having believed so much falsehood. And they list it like someone emptying a drawer: the age, the nationality, the eye colour, the job title, being the boss of everything. Each fact, one more lie. I find that inventory very accurate, because that's how disillusionment is lived: not all at once, but piece by piece.
Indifference as punishment
Then comes the discard itself, the concept that gives the song its title. Absolute indifference, as if what was lived had been a one-night fling, something used and thrown away. Anyone who has been through it knows that silence hurts more than any fight.
The song doesn't hide the consequences: antidepressants, and even Tabi affected by everything that happened, something the lyrics promise never to forget. There the tone changes and the rage appears, unfiltered. There are very specific reproaches, insults and the campest threat possible: telling everything on a TV show or writing a book about his story.
I like that it ends with a shout as castizo (old-school Madrid) as «¡Pelota!» (roughly, "Suck-up!"). After so much hurt, that word sounds almost like a burst of laughter.
It's not a song for background listening either. It's for when you need someone to tell you that what you feel makes sense, that you're not crazy and that there are more people in the same boat.
I dedicate it to everyone who is still crying in secret over someone who didn't deserve it.
