Cover of the single DE MITO A VÓMITO

De mito a vómito: when the idol you had at home comes crashing down

How fast you go from one thing to the other. De mito a vómito (From Myth to Vomit) opens with very short lines, almost single words, as if breathing were hard: «de mito a vómito, y tú solito, qué bonito» ("from myth to vomit, and you all alone, how lovely"). I like that way of starting, in fits and starts, because that's how your head sounds when you've just found out something you didn't want to know.

The lyrics tell of the fall of an idealised person. He had been the myth, the admired partner, and suddenly his double life comes out. From there, everything takes on a new meaning. Even the most romantic place, a cliff above a cove that a year ago seemed gorgeous, becomes the setting for disappointment, because looking at the dates it turns out he was doing that back then too.

But it isn't just a sad song. It has a very Spanish streak of spite that I find really funny: get back with him? Mount Teide will erupt first. Not by phone, not by email, not by WhatsApp. Let some air in, and let your mother put up with you. And a detail that feels very real to me: don't use the animals as an excuse, we've already divided them up. Anyone who has ended a life together knows how much that line weighs.

There's fine irony too, like that «al menos has ascendido, me alegro mucho» ("at least you've moved up, I'm very happy for you") aimed at the next one, or the warning to try not to leave the next guy so wrecked. And the underlying reason for everything, summed up without beating around the bush: thinking with his dick.

The word vómito is repeated until you're dizzy, literally. It's almost a musical retch, and I think it works because that's what disillusion feels like: something you have to get out of you so you can carry on.

For me, this song is about idealisation and how dangerous it is to put someone on a pedestal. I'd dedicate it to whoever has just taken someone down from theirs and still doesn't know whether to cry or laugh. The answer is both, and the song lets you do them at the same time.
