Before the Bells, that still moment before everything begins
Before the bells ring, before the night knows what it has to bring, before the morning asks us to make noise. «Before the Bells» lives in that gap: the still instant before the world starts demanding things.
The first thing that strikes you is how it opens. A copla lament, «ay, mi pena» ("oh, my sorrow"), stretched until it almost breaks, and then the lyrics switch entirely to English. I really like that bridge between Andalusian sorrow and a more contemplative tone, almost a lullaby for adults. It's as if sadness came in through the front door and then sat down to talk in another language.
Each verse chains one «before» after another. Before names are carved in stone, before the body learns to be alone. There's a sense of farewell that's never fully spoken, and the lyrics prefer not to explain it. Instead, they suggest sitting with what we can't control and breathing in that space between those still alive and the brave.
The line that touches me most is «time loosens what it came to claim». For me it sums up the song. There's no victory and no secret plan, the lyrics say, just being here as best we can. Hands forget the shape of every fight and the heart comes untied even when there's no light.
The last verse is almost a statement of principles in a whisper. A warmth that asks for no proof, a truth that never learned to raise its voice, and the idea of staying where the breath is still sincere. It seems to me a very honest way of talking about grief and tiredness without promising happy endings.
I'd dedicate it to anyone going through a loss who doesn't want to be cheered up. To whoever just needs company and silence.
Very early, before the alarm goes off. Or in that strange hour of the night when everyone is asleep except you.

Lyrics · Before the Bells
Aaaaaaayyyyy mi penaAyyyyyyyyyyyy mi penita
Before the bells remember how to ring,Before the night is told what it should bring,We sit with what we cannot make behave,A breath between the living and the brave,Time loosens what it came to claim,Time loosens what it came to claim.
Before the names are spoken into stone,Before the body learns to stand alone,The hands forget the shape of every fight,The heart unknots itself without a light,No victory, no hidden plan,Just being here the best we can.
Before the morning asks us to be loud,Before the world decides what’s allowed,There is a warmth that doesn’t ask for proof,A truth that never learned to raise a roof,Not hope, not faith, not something new,Just staying where the breath stays true.
