Barcelona, you and me: a night of dancing by the sea
Midnight, lights on and the glow of the city over the sea. «Barcelona» starts like that, with two people meeting on the dance floor and a heart skipping a beat as soon as the other starts to move.
It's a dance and seduction song, with no pretensions beyond that, and to me that's a merit. The lyrics move back and forth between English and Spanish completely naturally, the way people talk in the small hours in any city full of people from elsewhere. The Spanish phrases work as winks, things like «perdidos en la mirada» ("lost in each other's eyes") or «nos liberamos» ("we set ourselves free"): little whispers between the music.
The chorus asks you to turn the volume up and feel the rush. Heart to heart, together you and me, and the name of the city repeated over and over as if it were the beloved's. I like that confusion: you don't know if the song is in love with someone or with the whole of Barcelona. Probably both.
In the second verse the dance floor moves to the beach. Hands on hips, steps in the sand, the bass booming and the night wrapping everything up. There's a very clear wish for it not to end, to stretch the moment until the sun comes up. It's all body, rhythm and closeness, no drama and no promises for tomorrow.
For me, «Barcelona» is the postcard of a perfect summer night on the coast: moon, racing pulse and someone looking at you in a way that needs no translation.
I'd dedicate it to anyone who's had a one-night love in a city that wasn't theirs and still smiles remembering it.
