The machine plays, the man signs: in “Tangled Light”, Madrid's Mike Sain't Louis shows where the AI ends and the author begins
An English-language song about twenty years of surviving someone who fed on his light gives the indie alternative artist, who calls himself “the first AI singer-songwriter”, a clear way to explain his method: the tools are new, the words are his

Madrid, 25 October 2026 – Ask most people what an “AI artist” is and they will picture a computer churning out songs on demand. Mike Sain't Louis, an indie alternative artist based in Madrid, offers a different picture, and “Tangled Light” is perhaps the clearest example of it. The song is written in English, and its starting point is not a prompt but a life: in the note he published alongside it, Mike describes it as “the echo of twenty years trying to survive someone who thought they could break me, silence me, erase me.” No machine wrote that sentence. He did. That distinction is the whole point of how he works, and of why he calls himself “the first AI singer-songwriter”.
An instrument, not an author
Mike Sain't Louis is a lyricist, composer and music producer, the artistic director of his own work and the CEO of his own independent label, MIKE SAIN'T LOUIS. There is no record company behind him and no middlemen. He writes every lyric. The music and the vocal performance are created with artificial intelligence, which he uses as a production and arrangement tool, much as earlier generations used the synthesiser, the drum machine or the sampler. The word, the idea and the artistic direction are his.
In practice that means the process always runs in the same direction. First comes the text: an image, a memory, a line that will not go away. Only when the words hold together does he begin searching for a sound. He uses AI to try tempos, textures and arrangements, generates the music and the vocal line, listens, rejects, rewrites a line, listens again. Most of his singles also get their own music video, and the visual direction is his too.
“People ask me whether the AI writes my songs. It has never written a single line of mine,” Mike Sain't Louis says. “It's a band that never sleeps and never argues about money. But a band doesn't decide what the song is about. I do. If you take my words away, there's nothing left to play.”
A song built from things that happened
“Tangled Light” makes that argument better than any explanation. Mike is explicit that it should not be heard as a romance. “This is not a love song,” his note begins. What follows is a short, unsparing account of a long relationship in which one person tried to diminish the other – to break, silence and erase him.
The note insists on the reality of what lies underneath: “Every scar in this track is real. Every line is something I lived.” And it frames the outcome in two sentences that read almost like a refrain: “You tried to drown me, and I learned to glow. You tried to tame me, and I became impossible to touch.”
Mike has spoken publicly about the purpose behind songs like this. With professional support, he turns years of relationships with narcissistic partners into music, to make narcissistic and psychological abuse visible, along with the marks it leaves on mental health, and so that people living through it feel seen and believed. “Tangled Light” sits squarely in that work. Its subject is not heartbreak in the ordinary sense but the slow, disorienting experience of having your own light used up by someone else – and the moment that changes.
He calls the accompanying video “a quiet rebellion. A soft burn.” And he describes the release that comes when you finally cut the cord with someone who feeds on your light: the world, he writes, suddenly opens and breathes again.
Why the words have to be his
This is where the question of AI stops being abstract. A song like “Tangled Light” only works if the listener can trust that its scars are real. A machine can produce something that sounds like a confession; it cannot have lived through twenty years of anything. The authorship Mike claims is not a technical credit but a moral one: he is the person who went through it, and he is the person who chose these words to say so.
“Some people think using AI makes the songs less personal. For me it's the opposite,” he says. “I don't need anyone's permission, any studio, any label to tell my story. The tool lets me get it out exactly as I wrote it. The pain was mine. The words are mine. The decision to share them is mine.”
That stance also explains why he writes in several languages. Most of his catalogue is in Spanish, but he also writes in English, French and Portuguese. English, in “Tangled Light”, gives the song a stark directness: short sentences, no slang, nothing to hide behind.
The wider world: PLANETA GAYFOLK
“Tangled Light” belongs to a much larger project. Over roughly two years of work – it was not quick – Mike has built PLANETA GAYFOLK, a catalogue of 273 singles and more than 280 music videos. At its centre is the GAYFOLK trilogy, three albums conceived as a single journey: I. “Descubierto un nuevo planeta llamado GAYFOLK” (“A New Planet Called GAYFOLK Has Been Discovered”), II. “Ojalá se pudiera viajar a GAYFOLK” (“If Only We Could Travel to GAYFOLK”) and III. “El día de la liberación” (“Liberation Day”). The destination is a planet where everyone can live exactly as they are.
His style ranges from electropop to Spanish copla, from alternative pop to ballads, and much of it is loud, camp, cheeky and uncensored queer pop. He writes about love and heartbreak, exes, nosy neighbours, queer life in Spain, liberation and mental health, and some of his lyrics are explicit by design. Many listeners first found him in 2024, when “Tan Cateto” went viral on TikTok. “Tangled Light” shows the quieter, more serious side of the same artist: the humour elsewhere in his catalogue and the gravity here come from the same place.
In his note, Mike sums it up in three words: “This is GayFolk.” The planet he has invented is not only a party; it is also somewhere to land after surviving something.
Dunes at sunset
The photograph that accompanies this release shows Mike Sain't Louis among sand dunes in the low light of sunset. It is an apt image for a song about light that survives: wide open space, nothing pressing in, the sky still glowing as the day ends. If “Tangled Light” is about the world opening and breathing again, this is what that might look like.
Why it matters to Irish listeners
Ireland has a deep tradition of songwriting in which the lyric is everything – where the singer may change, the arrangement may change, but the words carry the weight and the truth. In that sense, Mike's insistence that the words are the signature will sound familiar. The debate around AI in music is often framed as a threat to songwriters; “Tangled Light” offers a different perspective, from a songwriter who uses the technology precisely so that nothing stands between his words and the listener.
The song's theme also travels well. Conversations about coercive control and psychological abuse have become far more open in recent years across Europe, including in Ireland, and a song that names that experience plainly, in English, may reach people who recognise themselves in it. And for Ireland's LGBTQ+ community, PLANETA GAYFOLK offers a body of queer work from Spain that is both funny and unflinching.
