“Stopping Isn't Quitting”: Mike Sain't Louis on Burnout, Guilt and the Song He Wrote to Do Nothing At All

In a question-and-answer interview, the Madrid indie alternative artist who calls himself 'the first AI singer-songwriter' talks about learning to rest beside a tool that never tires, and about the long road from 'Tangled Light' to the beach of 'María María'

MADRID, 25 October 2026 — Mike Sain't Louis has released 273 singles and more than 280 music videos in roughly two years. The Madrid-based indie alternative artist, who presents himself as "the first AI singer-songwriter", writes every lyric himself and uses artificial intelligence to generate the music and vocal performances, which he directs as a production tool; he does not sing. All of it comes out on his own independent label, MIKE SAIN'T LOUIS. With output like that, the obvious question is how he works. The more interesting one, it turns out, is how he stops.

On the machine that never sleeps

Your tool can produce a new version of a song at three in the morning. Can you?

Physically, yes. That's the problem. The software doesn't yawn, doesn't need a weekend, doesn't go on holiday. For a while I behaved as if its capacity was my target. It isn't. A machine's stamina is not a goal for a human being. It sounds obvious written down. It wasn't obvious with the laptop open and a song half finished.

What did it look like when it went wrong?

Hours choosing between versions that were nearly identical. Dry eyes, cold coffee, and no idea any more whether one was better or I was simply too tired to hear the difference. That's the moment I realised I wasn't creating. I was working a shift that nobody had given me.

Where does the guilt come from?

From how cheap it has become to make one more. When a song took months, waiting forced you to stop. Now the question isn't "can I make another?" but "why not?" And that question has no floor. There's always one more version, one more chorus, an old lyric that deserves to come out. So I've had to put the sign on the door myself: closed.

On writing from the wreckage

"Tangled Light" is one of your English-language tracks. What is it about?

I always say it is not a love song. It's the echo of twenty years trying to survive someone who believed they could break me, silence me, erase me. Every scar in that track is real. The line I come back to is: "You tried to drown me, and I learned to glow."

That's a heavy thing to carry into a creative routine.

It is, and that's why rest matters to me. With professional help, I've been turning years of relationships with narcissistic partners into songs. I do it so that people who've been through psychological abuse feel seen and believed. But you can't write that from an empty tank. If I burn out, the songs get angrier and less true.

The video is described as a quiet rebellion.

A soft burn. It's about what happens when you cut the cord with someone who feeds on your light. Suddenly the world opens and breathes again. That breathing is the whole point.

On the song where nothing happens

And then there's "María María", which seems to go the other way entirely.

Completely. It's tiny. María on the beach, sun and breeze, joy. A green leaf, soft waves, company. White sand, free dreams, harmony. And a chorus that just says I find peace every day. That's it.

Why release something so simple?

Because after "Tangled Light" I needed a song where nothing happens. No ex, no fight, no joke with a target. People expect me to be loud and camp, and I am, often. But I wanted proof in my own catalogue that a calm day also counts. Rest isn't a gap between songs. Sometimes it is the song.

Did writing it feel like work?

It felt like breathing out. Which, I've decided, is also part of the job.

On what the listener gets

Your entire catalogue is free to download. Doesn't that add pressure to keep producing?

It's the opposite. There's no paywall, no subscription, no quarterly target. Nobody is waiting for a number from me. The songs are there, with their lyrics, for whoever needs them. If I stop for a week, nothing collapses.

Many people found you through "Tan Cateto" going viral on TikTok in 2024. Did that change your pace?

It made me feel I had to keep up. I've learned that the people who stayed didn't stay for the speed. They stayed for the words.

Why it lands in Britain

The conversation about overwork and the always-on culture is familiar in Britain, in creative industries and well beyond them. Mike Sain't Louis offers an unusual angle on it: a one-person label in Madrid, writing mainly in Spanish but also in English, French and Portuguese, whose collaborator is a tool that literally cannot get tired. His catalogue moves from electropop and copla to alternative pop and ballads, and his GAYFOLK trilogy, "Descubierto un nuevo planeta llamado GAYFOLK", "Ojalá se pudiera viajar a GAYFOLK" and "El día de la liberación", follows a journey to a planet where everyone can live as they are. The photograph with this interview, by a mountain lake in the mist, makes his point better than any lyric: sitting still is allowed.
