Sequins, Stretched Vowels and the Truth: A Profile of Mike Sain't Louis, the Madrid Songwriter Who Jokes So He Can Tell You Everything

The indie alternative artist behind PLANETA GAYFOLK, who calls himself 'the first AI singer-songwriter', uses camp and comedy to say what a straight face cannot, from a wrecked promise of growing old together to a sequinned homage to Carmen Sevilla

A man with curly black hair and a short beard, in a black jacket with sequin-covered lapels and a black V-neck T-shirt, sits on a leather sofa in a dressing room looking to the side; behind him are a make-up mirror with lit bulbs and equipment flight cases.

MADRID, 25 October 2026 — The first thing you notice in the photograph is the lapels. Black jacket, sequins catching the light, a dressing-room mirror ringed with bulbs. It looks like the moment before a show. Mike Sain't Louis, the Madrid-based indie alternative artist who describes himself as "the first AI singer-songwriter", has built a whole body of work in that moment: the one where you put on something shiny so that you can walk out and say something true.

A comedian's timing, a diarist's honesty

Over roughly two years, Mike Sain't Louis has released 273 singles and more than 280 music videos under the banner PLANETA GAYFOLK. They are funny, often outrageously so. They are also, very often, about the worst things that have happened to him.

He does not see a contradiction. "People think humour is the opposite of seriousness," he says. "For me it's the delivery system. If I come in crying, you look away. If I come in wearing sequins and making a joke, you stay long enough to hear the bit that hurts."

He writes every lyric himself. The music and the vocal performances are generated with artificial intelligence, a tool he uses for production and arrangement and directs version by version. He does not sing. What he signs is the writing, the concept and the artistic direction, released through his own independent label, MIKE SAIN'T LOUIS, of which he is also CEO. There is no record company above him.

That independence explains the tone. There is nobody to ask him to soften a line, and so the jokes land where he aims them: at exes, at prejudice, at the music industry, and frequently at himself.

The song that stretches every word

"Envejecer" ("To Grow Old") shows how thin the line between comedy and devastation can be in his work. On the page, the lyric looks almost absurd. Words are broken onto separate lines, one per line, and vowels are dragged out across the page: a "never again" with a run of extra u's, a "so sad" that refuses to end.

It reads like melodrama with a wink. Then you reach the question at the centre of the song, and the wink disappears. The narrator wants to know why his partner used to ask whether he could picture the two of them as little old men holding hands, while cheating on him at the same time.

The answer comes at the end, too late to matter: yes, he could picture it. "Estaba tan seguro que juntos íbamos a envejecer." He was so sure they were going to grow old together.

"The exaggeration is the honest part," Mike Sain't Louis says. "That's what it actually feels like. You don't think in tidy sentences when you find out. You think one word at a time, and every word lasts forever."

Lentejuelas, and a debt to Carmen Sevilla

If "Envejecer" stretches pain until it becomes almost comic, "Cariño trianero" goes the other way: it takes a piece of classic Spanish glamour and gives it a new body. The song is his version of the classic associated with Carmen Sevilla, recorded as a heartfelt homage to her and to an era when, in his words, Spanish music had soul, sequins and truth.

He kept the original lyric exactly as it was. "It didn't need a single word changed," he explains in his own notes on the song. What changes is the point of view: he brings it back from his PLANETA GAYFOLK with a gaze he calls marica, free and contemporary, not to copy it but to celebrate it. Old songs, he argues, can sound new when they are told from another place, another life and another body.

"Carmen Sevilla opened the way," he writes. "I just add my light, my tone and my truth."

It is the photograph's sequins made audible: a tribute that is camp and sincere at the same time, which is exactly what camp, done properly, has always been.

Why British listeners will recognise the move

Britain has a long tradition of telling the truth through a raised eyebrow, from music hall to the sharpest pop lyricists, and of treating camp as a serious art rather than a costume. Mike Sain't Louis works in Spanish, with songs in English, French and Portuguese too, but the method will feel familiar: the joke opens the door, and the truth walks in behind it.

His catalogue ranges from electropop to copla, the dramatic Spanish song tradition, and from alternative pop to ballads. The subjects are love, heartbreak, ex-boyfriends, nosy neighbours, queer life in Spain, liberation and mental health. Some lyrics are explicit, and that is part of the work. Many listeners first found him in 2024, when "Tan Cateto" went viral on TikTok.

Behind much of the humour sits a purpose he has spoken about openly. With professional support, he turns years of relationships with narcissistic partners into songs, to give visibility to psychological abuse and its marks on mental health, so that people who have lived through it feel seen and believed.

The trilogy as a destination

All of this feeds into the GAYFOLK trilogy, three albums conceived as a single journey: "Descubierto un nuevo planeta llamado GAYFOLK", "Ojalá se pudiera viajar a GAYFOLK" and "El día de la liberación". The destination is a planet where everyone can live exactly as they are, which, he jokes, would also be the first place where nobody asks him to calm down.
